South Hedland Aquatic Centre closed for works

South Hedland Aquatic Centre has been closed for maintenance works following a water quality failure in the pool’s filters.

Acting Mayor Camilo Blanco said the Town of Port Hedland and YMCAWA were taking advice from experts regarding the pool.

“Water quality and patron safety is our top priority - I am not going to put anyone's health at risk,” Acting Mayor Blanco said.

“Experts have advised that the filters have failed water quality tests and as an extra precautionary measure we have closed the aquatic centre.

“It’s important to note that the pool water itself has not failed tests and we have no reason to believe there has been any risk to patron safety – yet we are being extra cautious and not taking any chances.

“Council has approved $1.74 million this financial year to upgrade the centre we are now assessing whether these works can commence earlier (rather than the planned timeframe of post-Summer) so we can fix the problem once and for all.

“We acknowledge that it’s not the best timing to shut the pool with our weather heating up, however I want to reassure the community that water quality and patron safety is our number one priority.

“With Gratwick Aquatic Centre currently undergoing scheduled maintenance and due to open on 1 October, we are endeavouring to open the pool earlier. Advice will be provided in the coming days. We are also looking at organising shuttle buses from South Hedland to Gratwick Aquatic Centre.

“I am committed to keeping the community informed.”
